HVAC installation costs: what is missing from your quote?
A low HVAC quote can look different once electrical work, duct changes and removal are added. Find out what you would still have to pay for before signing.

Start here.
Compare the complete installed job, not just the equipment. Ask whether electrical work, duct changes, permits, removal and start-up checks are included. “By owner” or “by others” means a responsibility needs clarifying.
Start with electrical and control work.
Does the price include required circuits, disconnects, control wiring and thermostat work? Ask who determines whether electrical changes are necessary and who performs them. Avoid interpreting “by others” as included.
Ask what happens to the ducts and connections.
The proposal should say what is reused, modified or replaced. Ask about transitions, accessible leakage, insulation and balancing where relevant to the project. A new unit connected to the old duct system is not the same scope as improving that system.
Make permits, removal and testing visible.
Request a list covering permit handling, old-equipment removal, disposal, start-up and final checks. Ask what record you receive at completion. Do not assume these are excluded; ask the bidder to state the inclusions clearly.
Use a scope gap example.
Illustrative comparison: one offer includes an electrical circuit and another says “electrical by owner.” Before choosing the lower total, get the separate electrical quote and confirm coordination. Adding the missing work is more informative than comparing the two original totals alone.
Agree on changes before the crew arrives.
Ask how unexpected conditions will be documented and priced, and who approves additional work. Keep optional improvements separate from required installation items. If a financing offer is involved, ask how a scope change affects the amount financed and the payment terms.

Full Advocacy · $499
We compare the bids, get answers about missing details and put our recommendation in writing. Then we negotiate scope and price in one final round. Full Advocacy includes one local visit when needed, so we can step in for you and save you time on repeat consultations.
If you hire a participating contractor, they pay us a disclosed fixed success fee after you sign their agreement and they receive your initial deposit. You choose, hire and pay the contractor directly. Their fee is not added to your agreed contract price and does not change it. Savings are not guaranteed.
