HEATING & COOLING / HOMEOWNER GUIDE

Are HVAC maintenance plans worth it? Read past the discount.

A discount is not a reason to sign a year-long commitment. Buy the plan for the useful work it includes, after you know what the full year will cost.

Check which HVAC equipment the plan covers.

Ask whether a visit covers your furnace and AC together, one system only or each indoor ductless unit. Confirm extra charges for additional systems, filters or access. Two visits can mean very different amounts of work in two homes. The agreement should identify what is being maintained.

Read the actual tune-up task list.

Ask for the equipment-specific task list and the service record you receive afterward. ENERGY STAR recommends professional preseason maintenance and describes heating and cooling checks. Ask your provider to match the plan to your manufacturer’s guidance. A visit that only gives you a replacement estimate is not the same as completing agreed maintenance.

Separate maintenance, repair discounts and repair coverage.

Maintenance is the agreed preventive work. A repair discount changes the price of separately authorized repairs. Repair coverage pays for specified events under stated terms. Ask which of these the contract actually provides. Do not assume a membership includes replacement parts, diagnostic visits or after-hours labor.

Ask what priority HVAC service actually promises.

Ask how appointments are scheduled, the service hours and what priority provides during peak demand. Does the provider promise a response time, an appointment window or simply placement ahead of nonmembers? Find out what happens when parts are unavailable. Priority status is not automatically a guarantee of immediate restoration.

Check annual cost, automatic renewal and cancellation.

Request the annual total, billing schedule, renewal price rules, minimum term and cancellation process. Ask whether unused visits expire or transfer if you move. Compare these commitments with buying the same useful visits individually. Do not assume a repair discount will repay the plan cost.

Approve extra HVAC work separately from the plan.

Ask the technician to distinguish an observed defect from an optional upgrade and explain the urgency. You can request a written proposal for additional work without authorizing it during the maintenance visit. Keep copies of service records even if you later change companies. We do not operate or sell a maintenance subscription.

Questions before you decide.

Does buying a maintenance plan preserve every warranty?

Check the actual warranty requirements for your equipment. Do not assume one particular contractor’s membership is required merely because it is offered.

Is a plan better than scheduling visits myself?

That depends on the tasks, price, scheduling help and terms. Compare the same work and the support you expect to use rather than choosing by the membership label.

What should I check before an HVAC plan renews?

Look for the renewal date, new price, notice requirements and cancellation method. Check whether unused visits carry over and whether the work still fits your equipment. Keep a copy of any cancellation confirmation.

Make the next decision easier.
