SOLAR / HOMEOWNER GUIDE

Should you replace your roof before installing solar?

Putting solar on a roof that soon needs work can mean paying to move the panels. Check the roof now and ask who would handle that work later.

By ProjectSide · October 21, 2026

Start here.

Get the roof condition checked before deciding. Not every solar project needs a new roof, but you should understand any repair needs and the cost and responsibilities of removing panels for later roof work.

Get the roof condition assessed before scheduling solar.

Ask a qualified roofer to explain any repair needs and limitations of the inspection. Share that assessment with the solar installer. A roof’s appearance from the street is not a substitute for evaluating the proposed attachment areas.

Ask what a later roof project would involve.

Who would remove and reinstall the panels? Would the original installer still service the equipment? Request a description of disconnection, storage, attachment work and restarting and testing the system. Do not assume that a roofer’s price includes solar handling.

Separate the responsibilities.

The roofer and solar installer should identify who handles penetrations, waterproofing and any damage discovered during the work. Keep their warranty documents together. If each company says the other is responsible, resolve that gap before starting.

Decide which job happens first and what each price includes.

One option might address a limited roofing issue before solar; another might replace a larger roof area. Ask what condition justifies each recommendation. Include the effects on installation timing and access, not just the roof covering price.

Use one project brief for both conversations.

List the intended solar layout, roof areas under consideration and your timing constraints. Ask each contractor to confirm its part in the sequence. That makes coordination visible and reduces the chance that removal, storage or testing is missing from both offers.
