HVAC / HOMEOWNER GUIDE

HVAC warranty: does it cover parts, labor or both?

“Ten-year warranty” can still leave you with a repair bill. Ask which parts, labor and service charges are actually covered before choosing the offer.

By ProjectSide · October 21, 2026

Start here.

A parts warranty does not automatically cover the work to diagnose and replace the part. Ask for separate answers about labor, service calls, refrigerant and other charges in the actual warranty documents.

Request the documents for the quoted equipment.

Record the manufacturer, model numbers and the actual warranty terms. Ask whether registration is required and who completes it. Keep confirmation instead of assuming that a promise in the sales conversation completed the process.

Separate each repair cost.

Ask about diagnostic visits, labor, refrigerant, shipping, travel and replacement parts. Coverage may differ by item and by provider. An extended service agreement may be separate from the manufacturer warranty, so identify the company responsible for each promise.

Read maintenance and transfer conditions.

Ask what records you should retain and whether the terms change when the home is sold. Do not assume all brands or agreements use the same conditions. The document for your equipment and contract is the place to check.

Compare service access as well as duration.

Who do you contact first, and what happens if the original installer is unavailable? Ask whether another qualified company can perform covered work and how authorization is obtained. A clear service path can be as important as the number of years advertised.

Get the promise into the final agreement.

If the salesperson describes free labor or a special replacement commitment, ask where that is written and what exceptions apply. Save the final equipment list, invoices and warranty records together. Our paid Full Advocacy service can help clarify competing offers. The installer and warranty provider remain responsible for their promises.

If you hire a participating contractor, they pay us a disclosed fixed success fee after you sign their agreement and they receive your initial deposit. You choose, hire and pay the contractor directly. Their fee is not added to your agreed contract price and does not change it. Savings are not guaranteed.

A membership and a repair warranty are different documents.

Ask whether a maintenance plan supplies preventive visits, discounts or actual repair coverage. Check the equipment warranty separately for care, registration and claim requirements. Keep service records, and request written confirmation of which diagnostic, travel and labor charges would remain yours for the proposed repair.
